Dachshund Colors and Patterns

Pictures of coat colors below

LH=Longhaired    S=Smooth    W=Wirehaired   Bk=Black  L=Liver  B=Blue

Dapple, Double Dapple, Brindle and Sable are patterns, NOT colors.  i.e. Red can have interspersed black hairs.  To appear as a Black and Red is called Sable, Black all over only on the ends is called Wild Boar.  Underneath it all the dogs coat color is red.

A Double Dapple comes from a litter of Dapple to Dapple.  A Double Dapple is where white appears over the already dappled coat color.  Any pattern can occur in any coat color.

Per AKC: Nose & Nails--in the case of black dogs, black; for chocolate and all other colors, dark brown, but self-colored is acceptable.  (Liver or nose and nails can occur on Liver Red, Chocolate, or Isabella)

Eyes can be Brown, Blue, Gray, Hazel, Green, or Tan.  In a Dapple you can have part, or all of one or both eyes blue, and sometimes you get real unique blends of color.

Where you see the second color of the base coat tan, it can also be cream instead.

Diluted Black is Blue

Diluted Chocolate is Isabella

A young puppy that looks cream is often a very light red.

Reds and creams also come shaded, which means they can have varying amounts of black in their coats

Cream is actually generated from a chinchilla gene, this is why true creams start off very dark, and lighten up from a golden blonde to a Platinum blonde.  Some creams are a clear cream, with no black roots.

Reds and Creams are the only colors that do not have visible tan points.

Dapple simply means spots; if silver dapple has silver overlay.  In the case of a Black and Tan Dapple you will see spots as a pup, but as an adult you will only see Black and Tan.

Registration meanings:

All my pups are AKC (American Kennel Club) registered.  The AKC allows 30 spaces for a registered name.  I would be appreciative if you could get the word 'Noodle' in there!  Some letters indicate Size, Coat, Color, and Show Titles or even different registries.   CKC is the Canadian Kennel Club.  UK is the United Kingdom.  Some applicable abbreviations after the Name are:

ML     Mini Longhaired.                                        Examples:

Reds can appear as very light to dark.

Gretchen pictured above is a light red whereas Ginger pictured below is a darker red.

Gretchen has darkened a bit with age.

Red Silver Dapple - 1 Blue Eye

In my experience the Red silver dapple looses the silver overlay as they age.

Only a few silver hairs interspersed remain as an adult; for example:
